CENTRO NACIONAL DE GOLF

WELCOME TO THE CENTRO NACIONAL DE GOLF  – THE HOME OF SPANISH GOLF

Centro Nacional de Golf was created by the Royal Spanish Golf Federation (RFEG) in 2005 with the purpose of opening up the game of golf to all.

Through this project the RFEG has achieved three goals:

  • The creation of the RFEG Headquarters – which is ever increasing in size.
  • Build a High Performance Center of Excellence – where the best Spanish amateurs and professionals can train with state of the art facilities.
  • The development of an 18-hole championship course with tournaments like: “Challenge 2006”, “Spanish Open 2007, “ Madrid Masters 2009” and “Spanish Open 2018” & training center that is available to all the public to learn, practice and play golf.

SMASHING SOCIAL & CULTURAL BARRIERS

Golf in Spain has historically been considered an elite sport, and was generally only played by members of high society.  Centro Nacional was constructed to smash through these ‘social’ and ‘cultural’ barriers, with the aim of popularizing the sport for all social classes.

Unlike other golf developments, Centro Nacional has also positively transformed the local community and neighborhood.  Located on the outskirts of the city center, Centro Nacional was built on a former landfill site and irrigates with recycled  water. This golf course has significantly transformed the area for residents. Furthermore, by making sustainability a key priority during the design, construction and operation of the project we are helping to improve the game’s negative environmental image.

In CENTRO NACIONAL DE GOLF objective in 2016 we made a transformation of the irrigation system with a 40% savings on the use of water.

On the way to this sustainability objective, in 2017, 14,000 square meters of artificial grass are installed on the practice course.

The RFEG realizes that one of the most effective ways of promoting golf in Spain is through the participation of Spanish golfers competing in international tournaments. In the past the successes of Seve and Olazabal in major tournaments has significantly increased golf participation in Spain.  In more recent times Sergio Garcia and Miguel Angel Jiménez are touching newer generations.

Our mission is to increase the number of Spanish golfers competing across all levels of golf.  We aim to achieve this through our scholarship program for junior golfers. Every year we select the best 20 boys/girls amateurs (under 18) across Spain and bring them to Madrid so that they can train at the Centro Nacional under the guidance of our professional teachers and play in tournaments. All of this is subsidized by the RFEG. We are completely focused on offering them the best golfing and personal education.

HELPING THEM TO BECOME THE BEST

To create high-performance, we wanted the Top 20 Spanish amateurs to have the best resources and facilities on offer. In 2012 the RFEG created the Center of Excellence.  This state-of-the-art training center features some of the most advanced golf and fitness technology, combined with highly qualified trainers. Recent graduates of our training program include:

  • Jon Rahm, number 5 world ranking
  • Azahara Muñoz, Solheim Cup champion 2013
  • Carlota Ciganda, Solheim Cup champion 2013
  • Beatriz Recari, Solheim Cup champion 2013

The Center of Excellence has also supported other leading Spanish golfers such as Rafael Cabrera, Gonzalo Fernández Castaño, Belen Mozo and Maria Hernandez. These installations are also used for organizing national and regional ‘ training camps’ for all team categories, and for ‘train the trainer’ programs.

MAKING GOLF AVAILABLE TO ALL

Our 18-hole championship golf course has hosted several European Tour events such as the Spanish Open (2007) and the Madrid Masters (2009) and Spanish Open (2018). We operate a ‘ pay as you play’ model with green-fees from 25$ per round. One of the lowest rates in Spain.

We pride ourselves on the range of facilities and teaching we have within our public school.  More than 1,800 students pass through our school every quarter, with nearly 50% of these being juniors. We offer 90-day courses, typically an initiation course (group classes / max 6 students).  Every person could enjoy our affordable prices: 160 euros for a 3 month course and 42 balls for 2 euros.

At the RFEG we are always thinking about the future of golf.  By working with a number of local schools in Madrid we are trying to put golf onto the educational agenda.  We arrange for buses to collect children from schools and bring them to our Center, where they can learn, practice and play golf. Our goal is to educate over 1,000 children to golf every year.

We are continuously working to make golf available to more people. By organizing public events that combine golf with other activities we are trying to introduce the sport to more and more people. In the past we have organized celebrity tournaments, festivals, team-building business events in order to reach out further.
