The rooming list said seven.

Nobody in your office wrote that down as a problem. Groups move. People drop out. You booked seven, you invoiced seven, and the file closed clean.

Here is what actually left the file. Five beds for four nights. Five airport arrivals. Five dinners. Five people who would have come home talking about a destination you are trying to build volume in.

Not one of them dropped out over a greenfee. They dropped out because of one sentence in your proposal, and it was a sentence you did not think twice about.

There is a question that is not on your enquiry form and that sets the final size of the booking. It is not how many play. I will get to it at the end.

Golf trips for mixed groups do not shrink on price

Open any mixed group proposal you have sent this season and look at the shape of it.

The golf half has course names, tee times, rounds, buggy inclusion, handicap requirements, whether the second course needs a certificate. It is properly built. It took you an afternoon.

The non golf half has one line. Usually some version of non playing guests can enjoy the resort facilities.

Twelve people open that document at the same time, normally in a group chat. Seven of them find themselves in it with a time and a course. Five of them find themselves described as the remainder.

People described as the remainder behave like the remainder. They do not commit.

Anyone who has run this desk for a few seasons has already spotted the pattern underneath, even if it never got said out loud: the objection never comes from the player. The player was in from the first email. The objection comes from the seat next to him. Noticing that is the hard part of the job, and if you are reading this you have already done it.

What comes after is a smaller problem than it looks, because it is not about inventing activities. It is about hours.

Twenty hours together, six hours apart

The structural mistake is quoting a mixed group as two trips that happen to share a hotel. Two programmes, two prices, neither of them speaking to the other.

That is not what happens on the ground.

A mixed group is together for most of the day. Breakfast together. Transfer together. Dinner together. And the two hours after dinner, which is where a trip is decided as a good one or a long one, are spent together.

They separate between eight in the morning and two in the afternoon. Six hours, and only on the days there is a round.

So what needs pricing twice is not the holiday. It is the morning.

That reframe solves half the problem before it appears. You stop having a golf programme with spare people attached and start having one programme with a six hour gap that needs filling three or four times in the week. Small problem, concrete fix, sortable on the same call.

What a non golfer programme is actually made of

Spa, pool and beach is the standard answer and it decides nothing, for a very simple reason. Every hotel on earth offers it. It does not separate your destination from anyone else’s and it gives nobody a reason to get on a plane.

What moves a non golfer to commit is a plan with a name and a time on it.

A plan with a time is a plan. A plan without one is a promise, and promises do not fill beds.

The difference is easiest to see with real destinations:

Casa de Campo: not the beach. Altos de Chavon in the morning, the marina at midday, and the Chavon river by boat on one named afternoon, which also happens to be the one photograph of the village nobody else in the group has.

Playa Granada: the Alhambra an hour from the course, in a city that picked up its first Michelin star in the 2026 guide. For a large part of the Spanish and northern European market that is not an alternative to the golf. It is the reason the trip happens at all.

Lanzarote: the whole island fits inside a thirty minute drive. Timanfaya in the morning, La Geria after, back at the hotel before the fourball has finished eighteen.

What those three share is a place, a day and a time. None of them says optional excursions available on request.

Six things the enquiries that hold together already have answered

Mixed group quotes that go out with the full manifest are not the cheapest or the prettiest. They are the ones that came out of a conversation where six things got asked before the spreadsheet opened.

1. How many play, how many do not, and which of the non players chose the dates. The third part is the one nobody asks and the one that tells you most.

2. How many rounds the keenest player wants and how many the least keen wants. In a seven golfer group there are rarely seven who want four rounds. There are usually three who want four, three who want two, and one who came along.

3. How many consecutive mornings the group tolerates being split. Two is fine. Three works with a decent plan. The fourth is where trips break, and not from boredom. It is the feeling of running two separate holidays in the same hotel.

4. Who pays for what. Group kitty, individually, or players settling their own golf. This does not change the price. It changes how the price is presented, which is what decides whether the group says yes first time.

5. Who shares with whom. Non players usually travel as couples. Players often travel twin share. The room mix comes out of that and the per person price comes out of the room mix.

6. Which day the whole group does something together with no clubs involved. One is enough. It is the day they describe afterwards.

Six questions, a ten minute call, and a quote that can no longer be read as two holidays stapled together.

The non golfer is not a discount line

There is a way of presenting the non player price that sinks bookings quietly, and it is the way most of the trade does it.

It is pricing them as the golf package minus the greenfees.

It reads as logical and it sells badly, because what the person actually reads is you are paying for less. And the person who feels like the one paying for less is precisely the one who later says they will sit this one out.

The same week, presented as two prices and two programmes written with equal care, reads completely differently. There is no subtraction. There are two products sharing a hotel, a transfer and a dinner table.

From the commercial side those five non players are not a discount. They are five beds, five transfers, five covers and five people going home as advocates for a destination you are trying to grow. A group that departs twelve instead of seven changes the value of the file by close to half, without selling a single extra round.

It is the same mechanism that makes a three option proposal close worse than a one option proposal. Not the content. The reading.

The rebook is decided by someone who has never held a club

This is the part that shows up two seasons later, in the repeat rate rather than in any single file.

When the group gets home, the golf gets discussed for about ten minutes. Scores, the par three over the water, who lost what on the last green.

Everything after that is the rest of the week. The dinner, the town, the afternoon somebody remembers. And the person who volunteers whether they are doing it again next year is almost never the low handicapper.

Operators with strong repeat business in golf tend to have this in common, and it is rarely on the brochure: their non playing programme is as specific as their golf one. It is the least glamorous line in the product and it is the one that decides whether the group comes back.

The same logic sits behind what you tell a group before departure. Cheap to do, invisible when done, expensive when skipped.

The question that is not on your enquiry form

Here it is.

Which of the non players has to say yes for this trip to happen?

In almost every mixed group there is one person who is not on the golf list and who holds a veto. Sometimes a partner. Sometimes the society treasurer. Sometimes the wife of the man paying for it.

That person never appears in the original enquiry and is usually the first to read the proposal end to end.

The proposal that includes them by name, with a plan and a time, departs with twelve. The one that calls them the remainder departs with seven.

The difference between the two is not the price. It is a paragraph.

If you have a mixed group on your desk right now

Email me at info@globalhemisphere.com with two numbers. How many play, how many do not.

I will send back the programme for both halves, priced separately, with the mornings already allocated, in any of the destinations we represent. No chasing five suppliers to get there.

And if the group is not confirmed yet, better. That is exactly the point where this changes the final number.

Free resource for travel agents

The 7-point checklist to fill a golf group

The same one I use with groups at Casa de Campo®, Madrid, Panama, Lanzarote and Playa Granada.
