Most of the Panama enquiries that reach my desk arrive in two waves.<\/p>\n
One wave in August and September, when operators are contracting for the following winter. A second wave in November, when a client has moved and someone needs eight rooms for January at short notice.<\/p>\n
Between those two waves, almost nothing. Not because the country closes. The Panama golf season runs all twelve months, and the rate for the stay and play packages at both resorts is the same in every one of them.<\/p>\n
The two month season belongs to the grid, not to the destination.<\/p>\n
And there is one month where Panama outperforms January for a specific kind of group. It is not the month your grid would guess, so it sits at the end of this piece.<\/p>\n
Worth saying plainly: putting Central America in the December to March block is not laziness. It is how the business works.<\/p>\n
You build a winter sun programme in summer, you contract it, you print it or you load it, and it goes out to the clients who cannot play at home. That process has paid for a lot of offices for a lot of years, and the operators who run it well are very good at it.<\/p>\n
The side effect is quieter than the process.<\/p>\n
A destination that only appears in the winter grid can only be sold from the winter grid. When a client calls in March asking about May, nobody in the office thinks about Panama. They think Portugal, Scotland, Turkey. Panama is not rejected. It is simply not in the room.<\/p>\n
It is in the room for other people. Those people are working off a different calendar.<\/p>\n
Panama has something that most Caribbean and Central American golf products do not: demand from three source markets whose calendars barely overlap.<\/p>\n
Europe.<\/strong> December to March. Long stays, groups of eight to sixteen, booked far out. That is your window, and it is the most contested of the three.<\/p>\n The United States and Canada.<\/strong> All year, peaking in winter and around school holidays. Short flight, minimal time difference, and the country runs on the US dollar, so nobody changes money or checks a card statement. For a North American buyer, Panama is a long weekend rather than a trip.<\/p>\n Latin America.<\/strong> Colombia, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Paraguay. They travel on their own holidays, which fall in January, at Easter and in July. Tocumen is the airport they already connect through to reach anywhere else, so Panama is not a long haul decision for them. It is a stopover they turned into a destination.<\/p>\n Lay the three side by side and the interesting number is not when the country is full.<\/p>\n It is when it is not.<\/p>\n Cross the three calendars and four months come out clean: May, June, September and October. No market is pushing hard in any of them.<\/p>\n They also happen to be four months your own programme leaves fairly empty.<\/p>\n Nobody has decided which client belongs in them, which is why they are still open. This is the reading I use, based on what actually books.<\/p>\n May. The client who already travelled in January.<\/strong> A client who takes one golf trip a year usually takes one because he was offered one. In May the courses breathe, the resorts are quiet and a group of six feels like it owns the place. This is the second sale to the same client, which is the cheapest sale in the business.<\/p>\n June. Corporate, and families the week school ends.<\/strong> Panama City is a genuine regional corporate hub, with headquarters and a convention calendar behind it. A three day incentive with half a day of golf inside it works there without leaving the city. Late in the month the other profile arrives: the player travelling with family, who needs beach and course in the same place.<\/p>\n September. The small group with no school run.<\/strong> Four to eight players, no children, able to travel whenever they like and actively trying not to share the course with anyone. Empty fairways and a quiet hotel are worth more to that profile than any discount you could negotiate.<\/p>\n October. Conference golf.<\/strong> This one is not a golf trip at all. It is half a day of golf added to a programme that already exists, for a client who is already flying to Panama City on an approved budget. A Nicklaus course fifteen minutes from the financial district turns an existing file into a bigger file, with no acquisition cost attached.<\/p>\n Four gaps, four different clients. None of them is your January client, which is the whole point.<\/p>\n The objection is fair and I get it every time.<\/p>\n May to November is green season. It rains. Nobody enjoys explaining rain to a client who has paid for a long flight.<\/p>\n The shape of that rain matters more than the fact of it. It concentrates in the afternoon and tends to clear quickly. Mornings are played.<\/p>\n The useful part is that the operation was already built that way. Panama tees off early because of the heat, not because of the forecast. Your group is walking off eighteen while the sky is still deciding.<\/p>\n Then there is the detail that rarely makes it into a brochure and probably should. The courses look their best in those months. Dry season is what punishes turf. The photographs your client posts, the ones that bring you the next group, are September photographs.<\/p>\n The afternoons do need filling. Canal, casco viejo, spa, a proper lunch. Left empty, the feedback comes back as a good trip with nothing to do after one o’clock, and that sentence costs you the repeat.<\/p>\n Here is the commercial mechanism that makes any of the above sellable without extra work.<\/p>\n Panama is not contracted by season. The golf package rate at both resorts is valid across the full year.<\/p>\n For an operator that is not a footnote, it is a different product shape.<\/p>\n It means the proposal you built for February still holds in September without rebuilding it. It means there is no high season supplement to explain and no shoulder period to argue about. And it removes the worst conversation in this business, the one where you quoted assuming low season and then have to call the client back because the number moved.<\/p>\n Most winter sun destinations force the price to move every time the date moves. That is precisely why operators keep selling the same eight weeks.<\/p>\n When the rate stops depending on the month, choosing the month stops being a budgeting problem. It becomes a question about which client is in front of you.<\/p>\n When someone sends me a gap in their calendar and asks whether Panama fills it, this is the order I go in.<\/p>\n One. Where the group departs from.<\/strong> The right month comes from the departure calendar, not the destination climate. A Colombian group in July and a British group in July are two different sales sharing a tee sheet.<\/p>\n Two. How many golf mornings they actually want.<\/strong> A group playing four consecutive days and a group playing two and seeing the country do not belong in the same month or the same resort. The first stays on the Pacific coast. The second starts in the city, and the two are two hours and fifteen minutes apart.<\/p>\n Three. Who is coming who does not play.<\/strong> With couples or families, the month is decided by what happens between ten and six. Panama City has a full day of its own. The beach resort has a different kind of day. They are not interchangeable.<\/p>\n Four. Whether moving the date moves the price.<\/strong> In most destinations it does. Here it does not, which is why this is the product that absorbs an awkward calendar gap better than anything else I represent.<\/p>\n Four questions. Not one of them is about the forecast.<\/p>\n It is May.<\/p>\n Europe has closed its winter, North America has not started school holidays, and Latin America sits between its own. All three curves drop at once, for a few weeks in which the destination performs exactly as it does in February.<\/p>\n What is left is a tee sheet with real morning availability, a resort that is not competing against itself for the same rooms, and the same rate you were quoted in January.<\/p>\n And one thing worth more than any of that. A client you already sold a trip to this year, who was not expecting a second offer.<\/p>\n He is never going to ask you for May.
